Visit to the Murate

The visit will provide an overview of the history of the Murate complex, from its foundation as a women’s convent for cloistered nuns, the Murate, to its transformation into a prison in the 19th century, which it remained until 1986, the year of Mario Gozzini’s prison reform. The itinerary winds its way through the spaces of the complex, ending in the harshest part of the prison, the most rigorous detention area, where Valeria Muledda’s sound installation Nuclei (Vitali) is located: an exquisite example of the artistic work being produced in the complex today.
