Florence Lights Up

from 06 December 25
to 06 January 26
From 6 December, the city lights up with Florence Lights Up, a festive spin-off dedicated to the theme of light

From 6 December to 6 January, Florence will once again be illuminated by Florence Lights Up, the Christmas spin-off that transforms squares and monuments into a vast visual laboratory through videomapping and light installations spread across the city.

From 6 December 2023 to 6 January 2026, the City of Florence‘s Department of Economic Development and Tourism, in collaboration with Fondazione MUS.E and with financial support from the Ministry of Tourism’s UNESCO Sites and Creative Cities Fund, as well as contributions from the Metropolitan City of Florence, the Florence Chamber of Commerce, Lego, and Montblanc, will illuminate the city with Florence Lights Up, a festive programme focused on light.

F-LIGHTS UP will transform Florence into a large-scale visual laboratory, with the façades of its most iconic monuments becoming three-dimensional canvases where light meets matter, digital innovation meets tradition and craftsmanship engages with new technologies. Video mapping will once again bring Ponte Vecchio to life, enchanting residents and visitors throughout the Christmas season. The same will happen on the façades of Palazzo Vecchio and the Church of San Paolino. Light installations will also illuminate Piazza Santa Maria Novella, Piazza San Lorenzo, the Chamber of Commerce façade, and the courtyard and monumental entrance of Palazzo Medici Riccardi.

The festive lighting will not be limited to Florence’s historic centre. Throughout the holiday period, the city’s other four districts will also be illuminated. In District 2, Piazza delle Cure will be lit up. In District 3, it will be the turn of Piazza Acciaiuoli in Galluzzo and Piazza Elia Dalla Costa in Gavinana. In District 4, the focus will be on Piazza dell’Isolotto and Piazza Pier Vettori. In District 5, a star installation will appear in Piazza Dalmazia, while San Donato Park will be lit up.

As in previous years, Firenze Smart has overseen the installation of Christmas lights in many squares and streets across the city. A total of 65 trees have been set up in the districts, along with 51 additional trees and 430 lamppost decorations connected to the public lighting system.

A dedicated scenography will also be activated for the holiday season, from 6 December to 6 January: dynamic coloured lighting will illuminate the historic gates, the Loggiato degli Innocenti and the Loggiato di San Paolo at the Museo Novecento. The company has also curated the permanent lighting of Ponte Santa Trinita. The new system enables the intensity and colour of the lights to be changed thanks to four-colour LED sources that can be mixed to create infinite fixed or dynamic combinations, all of which can be managed remotely.
