Heritage walks: starting from June 7, a new journey to discover the lesser-known Florence

Throughout the month of June, it will be possible to take part in four different free itineraries, available in both Italian and English.
The Florence World Heritage and UNESCO Relations Office of the Municipality of Florence and Fondazione MUS.E present—from Saturday, June 7 to Sunday, June 29—a new edition of the Heritage Walks. These free tours in Italian and English have been designed as part of the Firenze Forma Continua project, supported by the Italian Ministry of Tourism through the “UNESCO Sites and Creative Cities Fund.” The initiative aims to spread knowledge about Florence’s history and foster connections between the territory, its people, and its heritage.
Developed with the support of the HeRe Lab (Heritage and Research Laboratory)—a joint venture between the Municipality of Florence and the University of Florence—the Firenze Forma Continua project encourages residents to reconnect with the urban fabric of their city and aims to pass on its values to future generations.
These routes guide citizens and visitors—both Italian and international—through lesser-known areas of the historic center, uncovering fascinating architecture, unique views, and hidden stories, all while enjoying the beauty of Florence at sunset.

Starting from the city’s historic center, four distinct heritage itineraries have been developed, each focused on key areas of Florence’s history and life:

  • Northern route around Porta San Gallo – “New Traces of Ancient Connections”
  • Southern route along the Oltrarno walls – “Rethinking the Margin”
  • Around San Miniato al Monte – “Towards San Miniato”, highlighting the expansion of the UNESCO site
  • In the city center – “Enchantment of Fire”, dedicated to Florence’s post-world war II reconstruction project
While Florence’s Historic Centre was included in the UNESCO World Heritage List as “a unique masterpiece of human creative genius developed continuously over six centuries,” its cultural experiences are often limited to the main monuments and famous streets. These walks offer a broader perspective, revealing the rich web of places, relationships, and activities still ideally enclosed within the ancient city walls—an essential key to understanding Florence’s historical development.
