From the walk around Porta San Gallo to the one along the city walls, and the route around San Miniato al Monte: until October 27, a full calendar of free events
Following the success of the Heritage Walks, the Florence World Heritage and UNESCO Relations Office of the Municipality and MUS.E, with financial support from the Ministry of Tourism’s “UNESCO Sites and Creative Cities Fund” presents a new schedule of routes, starting on Saturday, September 7, and planned for every weekend in September and October.
The walks, conceived as part of the “Firenze Forma Continua” project, aim to spread the history of the city of Florence and foster connections between the territory, its people, and its heritage. Developed with the support of the Heritage and Research Lab (HeRe Lab, a joint laboratory between the Municipality of Florence and the University of Florence), the goals of the “Firenze Forma Continua” project are to reclaim the city’s fabric by the community and transmit its values to future generations.
The free itineraries will lead citizens, as well as Italian and foreign visitors, to discover lesser-known areas of the historic center, suggestive architectures, views, and stories of Florence, and appreciate the beauty of the city center at sunset.
Indeed, while the Historic Center of Florence was included in the UNESCO World Heritage List because it is “a unique achievement, a masterpiece of human creative genius, the result of continuous creation lasting over six centuries,” its cultural enjoyment is too often limited to the main monuments and the most famous streets, missing the complex network of places, relationships, and activities still ideally enclosed by the city walls: one of the most significant elements for understanding Florence’s historical evolution, rich in references and curiosities.
It is precisely from this perimeter — still evidenced today by the gates, towers, fortresses, and the Oltrarno walls, which have been almost entirely preserved — that three distinct heritage itineraries have been developed, in Italian and English, focused on key areas of Florence’s history and life:
– The Southern Route, along the Oltrarno walls, “Rethinking the Edge” (scheduled for September 9 in Italian and September 10 in English at 5 p.m., and September 28 in Italian and September 29 in English, also at 5 p.m.)
– The Route Around San Miniato al Monte (scheduled for September 14 in Italian and September 15 in English, at 5 p.m.)
– The Northern Route, around Porta San Gallo, “New Traces of Ancient Relations” (scheduled for September 21 in Italian and September 22 in English, at 5 p.m.)
