After the Flood: the Artists’ Engagement
November 3, 2016 – January 8, 2017
by Eva Francioli and Valentina Gensini
On the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the flood in Florence, Museo del Novecento reinterprets that tragic event as generator of international participation and solidarity.
The exhibition Beyond Borders includes an original selection of documents and artworks, that international and Italian artists from abroad donated to Florence in order to write an unreleased story as witness of a tragic event.
The artworks arrived in response to Carlo Ludovico Ragghianti’s call for the establishment of a Museo Internazionale di Arte Contemporanea that can symbolically refund the wounds of the historical-artistic heritage.
Among the artists that personally answered are Abe Nobuya, Ho Kan, Adja Yunkers, Emilio Pettoruti, Alberto Magnelli, Ibrahim Kodra, Fritz Wotruba, Daphne Maugham Casorati, Genni Mucchi and Edita Broglio. Additionally, the Cuban Artists and Kulturni Centar Beograd collections participated on the following years, and are now represented respectively through the artworks of Amelia Pélaez, Lolò Soldevilla, Rita Longa, Mica Popović, Vera Bozicović Popović and Branimir Micić.
The agenda includes a series of meetings focused on the reconstruction of the historical-artistic context, the 1960’s international relations and the importance of solidarity among different countries.
Developed in collaboration with Archivio Storico del Comune di Firenze, Fondazione Centro Studi sull’Arte Licia and Carlo Ludovico Ragghianti, Opificio delle Pietre Dure, Istituto Storico della Resistenza in Toscana and Advancing Women Artists Foundation, the project is supported by Fondazione Sistema Toscana with Sensi Contemporanei and promoted by Agenzia per la Coesione Territoriale together with MiBACT.
